VAN GOGH & MILLET - Lot 301

VAN GOGH & MILLET TILBORGH (Louis van), ed.; HEUGTEN (Sjraar van); CONSIBEE (Philip). Van Gogh & Millet. Zwolle, Uitgeverij Waanders; Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, [1990]. Large quarto, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding. Numerous color and black-and-white reproductions. An important catalog devoted to the relationship between Vincent van Gogh and Jean-François Millet, examining in detail the decisive influence Millet exerted on Van Gogh. The book compares paintings, drawings, and engravings and shows how Van Gogh appropriated Millet’s compositions—field labor, sowers, peasants, and scenes of rural life—to develop his own pictorial language. Published by the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh in Amsterdam, edited by Louis van Tilborgh, with contributions by Sjraar van Heugten and Philip Conisbee. Extensive comparative illustrations, particularly valuable for studying Van Gogh’s sources. Some scuffing, creases, and minor dents on the cardboard cover; a good copy.
