Val Saint Lambert - Charles Graffart & René Delvenne...

Val Saint Lambert – “Dunedin” Vase – Emerald Green Overlay Crystal – Hand-Cut Art Deco Crystal – Belgium, 1940s A refined and highly decorative Art Deco crystal vase by the renowned Belgian manufacturer Val Saint Lambert, model “Dunedin” (RD 244), dating to the 1940s — a period when the manufactory achieved exceptional mastery in the art of hand-cut overlay crystal. Executed in beautiful emerald green overlay crystal over clear crystal, the vase immediately captivates with its rich, luminous colour and remarkable brilliance. Green overlay is among the most elegant colours produced by Val Saint Lambert, admired for the striking contrast created when the outer coloured layer is expertly cut away to reveal the clear crystal beneath. The result is a fascinating interplay of transparency, depth, and vibrant light. Entirely hand-cut, the vase features a richly faceted geometric diamond-cut band encircling its upper section, producing brilliant reflections and exceptional sparkle. The lower body is decorated with elegant elongated vertical cuts that accentuate its slender proportions, while the gracefully flared neck and sculptural pedestal base create a refined balance between fluid lines and geometric precision. The model “Dunedin”, reference RD 244, is documented in the original Val Saint Lambert catalogue, an illustration of which is included among the photographs. The vase bears the engraved signature of the manufactory, confirming its authenticity. The combination of the deep emerald green overlay, graceful silhouette, and crisp hand-cut decoration gives the piece an almost jewel-like presence. Depending on the lighting, the crystal reveals a fascinating range of tones, from deep forest green to brilliant emerald highlights and sparkling clear reflections. Elegant and timeless, it is equally suited to a distinguished Art Deco collection or as a sculptural statement piece in a contemporary interior. Height: Approximately 21 cm. Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. There is a small internal glass imperfection near the upper rim, resembling a tiny internal hairline fracture. It is visible in the photographs but cannot be felt by touch on the inner surface and does not appear to be a typical surface chip. The crystal otherwise retains its beautiful clarity and brilliance. Minor manufacturing irregularities typical of handcrafted crystal may be present and are normal for authentic vintage production. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be carefully packaged, well protected and insured
