All auctions / Jewelry & Gems / Unworn Necklace From Theodor Fahrner, Pforzheim Around 1955
In the history of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewellery, Fahrner jewellery from Pforzheim occupies a special place. Theodor Fahrner and later his successor Gustav Braendle knew how to make artistically convincing designs and high-quality workmanship the hallmark of their brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings like hardly any other modern jewellery manufacturer. Theodor Fahrner made artists' jewellery affordable by combining modern forms with democratic materials. He did not create individual pieces for a small elite like Lalique or Cartier, but the designs were produced in series in silver, decorated with enamel, marcasites and occasionally precious stones. Jewellers and department stores all over Europe sold the jewellery, which Fahrner advertised extensively in journals and magazines: "Fahrner jewellery - designed by the best artists" allowed every woman to participate in a modern life full of beauty. Travellers with large sample cases presented the novelties developed in Pforzheim to the jewellers on site. One such sample case full of unworn Fahrner jewellery has lain untouched in an attic for more than 40 years until we were able to purchase it. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the company's dissolution in 1979, most of them with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. The necklace here is therefore also unworn and shows itself in best condition - an original Fahrner label with the inscription "Original Fahrner / Since 1850" is on the piece of jewellery together with the old article number. The centerpiece of the necklace features seven openwork links with a fine marcasite trim. These links are reminiscent of small clouds and appear playful and elegant at the same time. Beautiful pod-shaped links lead to the spring clasp. The piece of jewellery shows the typical design language of the 1950s with gentle sweeps and elegant detailed shapes. The necklace is made of silver that has been lightly gilded. This type of gilding is called "antique gilding" by Fahrner. It has a faint golden tone by which Fahrner jewellery can be easily identified. A wonderful overview of the wealth of designs can be found in the catalogueue "Theodor Fahrner. Schmuck zwischen Avantgarde und Tradition", edited by Brigitte Leonhardt and Dieter Zühlsdorff, Stuttgart 2005. Fahrner jewellery is often collected.
