Important bronze commemorative medal dedicated to George Washington, known as "Washington Before Boston," from the famous Comitia Americana series. Obverse presents the portrait of George Washington facing to the right, surrounded by a Latin legend. At the bottom is the inscription "Comitia Americana." The medal also bears the signature of Du Vivier, corresponding to the French engraver Benjamin Duvivier (1730–1819). The reverse depicts George Washington on horseback, accompanied by his officers, in front of the troops and artillery, with the city of Boston visible in the background. The inscription located at the bottom commemorates the recapture of Boston on March 17, 1776. The abbreviated signature of Duvivier is also visible in the composition. The edge bears the punch "Bronze," accompanied by a cornucopia, a mark associated with the strikes of the Monnaie de Paris. According to the characteristics of this issue, this specimen can be approximately dated to 1880–1910. The date 1776 on the medal corresponds to the historical event commemorated and not to the strike date of this specimen. Large-format medal, approximately 68 mm in diameter, featuring particularly detailed reliefs and a remarkable historical composition. The condition is clearly visible in the photographs. Presence of patina, signs of age, wear and surface alterations. Medal not graded. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow precise appreciation of the object’s condition. Beautiful historical medal dedicated to George Washington and to a major episode of the American War of Independence, after the famous creation by Benjamin Duvivier. The item will be carefully packed and protected to ensure maximum safety during transport.
