Historical Context of the Medal Around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (primarily driven by the Boer Wars and the lead-up to the First World War), the British Army emphasized a drastic improvement in shooting skill among military personnel. The medal is bronze and depicts crossed rifles on a wreath. This type of medal was not awarded as a standard issue, but had to be earned specifically by achieving high rankings in certain standings.
