Unique Antique Persian Bidjar Animal and Bird Rug - Circa 1880 - 6

Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs Unique Antique Persian Bidjar Animal and Bird Rug - Circa 1880 Size: 6 ft 8 in x 4 ft 6 in (2.03 m x 1.37 m) Provenance: Property of a retired New York dealer A highly distinctive nineteenth-century Bidjar rug animated by an engaging assortment of stylized animals and birds woven throughout its richly patterned field. Rather than serving merely as decoration, these charming figures bring movement, personality, and an almost narrative quality to the composition, inviting the viewer to discover new details continually. Their imaginative, slightly abstract rendering reflects the weaver’s individual artistic expression and makes the rug especially memorable. Bidjar rugs are traditionally admired for their dense construction, substantial handle, and exceptional durability, earning them the description “the iron rugs of Persia.” Yet this example stands apart for the abundance and spontaneity of its animal imagery. Combining formidable Kurdish craftsmanship with unusual pictorial charm, it is both a practical floor covering and a unique, highly collectible work of folk art.
