Undated (1795) Washington Liberty and Security Penny. Musante GW-45, Baker-30D, W-11060. Fire-Gilt Copper. Lettered Edge. AU-50 (PCGS). Partially gilt, otherwise olive-brown surfaces with plenty of medium to bright gold. An attractive AU example of this popular staple among Washingtoniana specialists and "colonial" coin enthusiasts alike, here with a generous amount of underlying luster. Devoid of significant marks and choice, as such. The Breen Encyclopedia (1988) assures us that this variety is seen "rarely gilt." Since the fire-gilding process was dangerous, exposing the makers to lead fumes, these specially prepared pieces certainly tend to be the rarer versions of their production output. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Dallas Signature Sale of December 2004, lot 5009; our (American Numismatic Rarities') Richard C. Jewell Collection sale, March 2005, lot 1110. PCGS# 767. NGC ID: CC42. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
