“Indeed, the beauty bestowed by pearls is worth it—so much so that thousands of daring divers, coastal dwellers of the Persian Gulf, and the intrepid pearl divers of Ceylon and Japan pay no heed to the terrors and dangers of the depths, do not shy away from encounters with sharks and sawfish, and do not fear the deadly embrace of the octopus, all to bring the pearl oyster, lying on the gloomy sea floor, into the bright light of the sun. Yet not every one of these shells rewards the effort and hardship of its hunter, and hundreds dash the hopeful expectation of a precious contents. However, if one is found that holds the longed-for treasure within, it is not uncommon for it to yield to the lucky finder an equal number of pearls of various sizes.” This is how the magazine “Der Bazar” described the hardships of pearl diving in 1888. At that time, the cultured pearls common today were still unthinkable, for it would be another half a lifetime before the Japanese entrepreneur Mikimoto succeeded in growing pearls on a large scale in oysters around mother-of-pearl nuclei. This necklace features genuine Oriental pearls, each of which was retrieved from the ocean floor by a diver. It’s hard to imagine how many oysters were needed to gather the pearls for this piece of jewellery, as not every oyster harbors such a small treasure. The natural pearls strung here—two rows in total—are all slightly different in size, with a slightly baroque shape, but all possess a beautiful luster. They are strung on platinum. An angular clasp in the characteristic Art Deco style holds the pearls in place with a setting of diamonds. We discovered this piece of jewellery in Hamburg. It comes with a detailed appraisal from the German Society for Gemstone Appraisal.
