Native American, Woodland period. Two ground and polished stone pendants, each drilled once near the upper edge for suspension. The first is cut from a dark, fine-grained stone with a smooth, satiny polish. It forms a neat tablet with a rounded top and a squared base, and faint smoky veining shows across its face. The second is longer and tapers like a tongue. It is worked from a coarser stone flecked in tan, gray, and charcoal, ground thin, and rounded at both ends. Each hole was bored partly from both faces, which is typical of drilling done with stone tools and abrasives. Ornaments like these were likely worn on a cord at the throat or chest, where they served as personal adornment and perhaps as marks of status. Item # 199613
