Mexico, Jalisco, Tlaquepaque / Tonala. Two vintage Mexican polychrome ceramic courtship groups in the Tlaquepaque and Tonalá style of Jalisc. Each tableau depicts a seated couple on a high-backed scrolled bench, one bench painted yellow and the other green, with the man holding a book and the woman in a patterned dress. The figures are hand modeled and characteristic of traditional Tlaquepaque and Tonala workshop production, and each group is painted overall in bright polychrome with striped, floral, and starburst decoration covering the benches and bases.
