Two decorative apothecary jars – polychrome earthenware with rich cartouches and Latin inscriptions A colorful duo with the charm of a historic apothecary. These two ceramic apothecary jars combine a pale glaze ground with expressive decorations in blue, yellow, green and reddish brown. Their related shape and different scenes make them together especially attractive. The jar with the inscription ‘P. AUREAE’ almost certainly stands for the Latin Pilulae aureae: ‘golden pills’. This was the name of a historical apothecary preparation containing, among other ingredients, aloe, saffron and herbs. It was formerly used as a purifying or laxative agent. The name does not automatically mean that real gold was in it. The recipe is also in the old Amsterdam apothecary books and features a decorative cartouche with flowers, yellow curls and a little winged face. Above the text field a snake coils around a staff: a recognizable reference to medicine. The pronounced craquelé gives the surface a lived-in look. The second jar bears the inscription ‘SAPO KALINUS’, the Latin term for potassium soap. Two colorful peacocks flank a fruit basket above the inscription band. Flowers, hanging ornaments and a small face at the bottom contribute to a richly worked composition. On the base there is a blue three-petaled clockmark. Inspired by the historic apothecary Earthenware apothecary jars were traditionally provided with Latin inscriptions to indicate their contents. Decorative text fields, birds and symbolic representations made such items simultaneously eye-catchers. These two examples align with that tradition of polychrome Delft-inspired earthenware. They form a atmospheric pairing for a display cabinet, library, or collection of pharmaceutical curiosa. Features * Two different apothecary jars, offered together. * Glazed earthenware with multicolored decorations. * Inscriptions: ‘P. AUREAE’ and ‘SAPO KALINUS’. * Decorations including a snake and staff, peacocks, flowers and faces. * One jar features a blue three-petaled clockmark. * Supplied without lids. * Exact makers and production dates not established; the mark alone proves no eighteenth-century origin. Condition Used condition with clear signs of wear and age. The jar ‘P. AUREAE’ shows extensive craquelé, also on the interior and underside, and small flakes along the footrim. Both jars show localized glaze loss, edge damage, discolorations and wear on the resting surfaces. Please view all overview and detailed photos carefully; they are part of the description.
