TV Stars

Special edition of Viewmaster in 1955, this set with television stars - beautifully photographed in 3D. With a few big names from the fifties. And for each name there are interesting stories attached. One I don’t want the bidder to forget. Edgar Bergen (1903–1978) was an American ventriloquist, comedian, actor, variety artist and radio performer. He was especially known for his ventriloquist dummies Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. The first one is in this Viewmaster pack in the photo. Fun detail; Charlie wears a Viewmaster Personal camera around his neck. Edgar Bergen was very serious about his ventriloquism activities and his dummies had their own room in the family home. Edgar was the father of Candice Bergen (born 1946), who would become a famous actress. That was a bit hard for the father, who was somewhat in her shadow as the 'father of Candice'. Candice spent much of her youth at Walt Disney’s side, among others, who was good friends with Edgar Bergen. That the Charlie doll received a lot of attention in the family was a fact — Charlie dominated Candice’s childhood, as she later wrote in her biography. When father Edgar died in 1978, he left his daughter nothing. Charlie got $10,000. A nice parting joke, from the now forever silent wooden doll. See the photos.
