Piscitello – 4-tile panel in hand-painted artistic Sicilian ceramic, Santo Stefano di Camastra – 1960/1970 Important and rare decorative panel composed of 4 glazed and hand-painted ceramic tiles, produced by the historic Piscitello manufactory of Santo Stefano di Camastra, a renowned center of Sicilian ceramic tradition. The panel is sold in its complete design but without a metal frame. The work, datable to the period 1960–1970, features a refined ornamental composition with floral inspiration, developed according to a strict geometric layout and mainly characterized by shades of blue, light blue, and white, enriched by delicate accents in ochre and orange. Perhaps part of a larger composition. In the center of the composition stands a large stylized floral motif, formed by wide white petals outlined by a bold dark line and enhanced by ochre details. The flower is enclosed within a diagonally arranged square geometric reserve, which constitutes the visual focal point of the entire panel. Around the central motif develops a rich sequence of volutes, leaves, arabesques and stylized vegetal elements, distributed symmetrically over the surface. The diagonal bands crossing the composition mark the design geometrically and create a balanced and dynamic decorative structure. Particularly evocative is the contrast between the light ceramic background and the various shades of blue, from sky blue to the deeper blue, used to highlight volutes, leaves and ornamental fills. The small touches of ochre and orange concentrated in the large central flower introduce a refined chromatic contrast and emphasize its centrality. The painting style, characterized by loose brushstrokes, variations in color intensity and a decisive and expressive graphic sign, gives the work the truly artisanal character of hand-painted ceramics. The whole combines elements of Sicilian and Mediterranean ornamental tradition with a free decorative interpretation typical of the twentieth century. The decoration, of great visual impact, testifies to the quality and originality of Santo Stefano di Camastra ceramic tradition, combining elements of Sicilian decorative culture with a form-driven research typical of the twentieth century. The panel is formed by 4 tiles of about 20 × 20 cm each, arranged in a square composition of 2 × 2 elements, for an overall size of about 40 × 40 cm (without frame). The work is attributed to the historic Piscitello manufactory and is attributable, by stylistic and decorative characteristics, to Santo Stefano di Camastra production from the period 1960–1970. The lot is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Piscitello company, which attests to the originality of the work and its dating to the period 1960–1970. Antonino Piscitello was a multi-awarded artist, a protagonist of important fairs and exhibitions in Italy and abroad (London, Paris, Munich, New York, Chicago, Milan and Florence). In 2006 he was officially recognized as a “Living Human Treasure” and was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list for Sicily.
