TIBET Two horns forming a box, one with a carved makara head. H. 20 and 28 cm Provenance: - Ian Triay Collection These horns were used to hold seeds—usually mustard seeds—intended to be offered to the fire. During the ritual, the practitioner would shake the horn to gradually release the seeds into the flames of a triangular ritual brazier. The tip of the horn is carved in the shape of a makara, a mythical creature. Reference: A horn similarly adorned with a makara head is featured in *Tibetan Rituals: Secret Visions of the Fifth Dalai Lama*, published by Éditions de la Réunion des Musées Nationaux, Paris, and Findakly, 2002
