THOMAS ROWLANDSON (BRITISH 1757-1827) SAINT CARLO BORROMEO GIVING ALMS TO THE POOR Pencil, pen and grey ink and grey wash 42 x 26cm (16½ x 10in.) Provenance: The collection of Russell Worby The present sketch by Rowlandson is after a drawing by Louis-Jacques Durameau (1733-1796) which was commissioned by Pierre Jean Mariette (1694-1774). The drawing was after the painting by Preti Mattia in the Chiesa di S. Carlo, Rome. Mariette commissioned a series of drawings from Durameau to record painting in Rome. Mariette's collection was sold in Paris between 15 November 1975 and 30 January 1776 and it's possible that Rowlandson copied the drawing then or when it subsequently entered the collection of Francois Basan.
