"This is bad." Goya engraving number 46 - 19th-20th century

Descriptio Etching and aquatint on paper. Approximate dimensions based on standard plate. Reproduction of plate no. 46, entitled *This is Bad*, from Francisco de Goya’s celebrated series *The Disasters of War*. The scene depicts the brutal murder of a friar by armed soldiers, with another figure lying dead on the ground. The composition conveys a powerful visual denunciation of institutional violence and the cruelty of war. This print, although not an original copy of Goya’s edition, retains the expressive force of the original design, with intense contrasts of light and an energetic brushstroke that captures the dramatic tension. These reproductions, very common in the 19th and early 20th centuries, served to disseminate Goya’s work to a wider audience and remain of great documentary and aesthetic interest within historical graphic art collecting.
