Typed letter signed Theodore Roosevelt as President, dated January 1, 1904, on White House stationery, addressed to his cousin W. Emlen Roosevelt of New York. In this personal New Year's letter, Roosevelt thanks Emlen for his thoughtful correspondence, discusses family matters and expresses confidence in his administration's policies. In a particularly interesting passage, Roosevelt writes, "I hope you are right when you say that the American people are back of my policies. I don't know. I am very sure, however, that they are the right policies." The statement offers a candid glimpse into Roosevelt's thinking during the year in which he would seek election to the presidency in his own right. Roosevelt also mentions several family members and expresses concern for Emlen's mother. Signed in full at the conclusion, with an additional handwritten postscript, "She has now," referring to Christine's arrival. Includes the original White House envelope addressed to W. Emlen Roosevelt at 33 Wall Street, New York, postmarked Washington, January 2, 1904. The letter exhibits original folds, light toning and minor handling wear. Estimate $600 - $1,000
