Platonic Solid - The Dodecahedron Representation of the Universe in ancient philosophy. The Platonic solids played an important role in Platonic philosophy. In the Timaeus (c. 360 BCE), Plato associated each of the four elements, Earth, Water, Air and Fire, with a representative solid. Plato linked the dodecahedron with the All (Phaedo, 110b; Timaeus, 55c), because it is the solid that most resembles the sphere. Aristotle named this fifth element, aithêr (aether in Latin, “ether” in French) and posited that the universe was made of this element, and that it was substantial to all the others, that it contained them all.
