The painting depicts the biblical episode from the Gospel of Luke in which the Virgin Mary and Joseph find Jesus, who had been left behind in the Temple, teaching amongst the scribes. The multi-figure composition shows the young Jesus seated at a desk beneath a canopy, set against a strikingly staged Renaissance architectural backdrop. The composition is a reference to the woodcut ‘The Twelve-Year-Old Jesus in the Temple’ by Albrecht Dürer, c. 1503, plate 16 from the ‘Life of the Virgin’. Similarities are particularly evident in the architectural framing with round arches and crossbeams, as well as in the stage-like, tiered arrangement of figures around the centrally emphasised Christ. The adoption and painterly development of Dürer’s famous woodcut demonstrate the significance and enduring influence of his printmaking on European painting. | 1471 - Nürnberg - 1528 | 15.-18. Jahrhundert | Gemälde | Nummer: 26x1605 | Provenance: Privatsammlung, Nordrhein-Westfalen (seit mehreren Generationen in Familienbesitz).
