The Path to the Bunker by Gary Westall Painting 9.5 x 11.8 :: This painting was created during a plein air painting session on the Danish coast amid highly changeable and windy weather. I was drawn to the former military structure a relic of World War II that has been preserved in the landscape. The narrow path leading through the dunes directly to the structure became a key element of the composition. I painted the landscape in muted shades of green brown and ochre. The diffuse light and the heavy sky reflect the gloomy weather and reinforce the impression of tranquility and desolation. I found the contrast between today’s peaceful natural surroundings and the visible traces of human history particularly interesting. Signed lower right.
