THE CANNONS FIRED A SALUTE FOR ME by Gary Westall Painting 19.7 x 23.6 :: “Trooping the Colour” is one of the most significant traditions of the British Royal Family. The guards’ red uniforms the precision of their movements and the centuries-old ceremony symbolize history discipline and continuity. For me however this motif is far more than a royal parade. I was born in London and have many personal memories associated with this city. As a child my father took me to Hyde Park every year on my birthday August 4. It was a moment of feeling like I was part of this great London tradition. When the gun salutes rang out he told me with a wink that they were fired in my honor. It was only later that I realized they were actually for the Queen Mother. Nevertheless the feeling remained that I was part of something special. This painting combines the public splendor of British ceremony with a very private memory: of my childhood of my father and of my special relationship with London and the royal family.
