All auctions / Miscellaneous / The Annunciation of the Virgin Peter Candid (Werkstatt)

In this drawing, the motif of the Annunciation is incorporated into a spandrel above a doorway. This motif was frequently found in the Middle Ages above church doors or the central east window of churches, and illustrates the believer’s path to salvation through participation in the celebration at the altar, which is situated along the church’s central axis, either in front of or behind the image of the Annunciation. The motif echoes the predella painting of the former high altar of Munich’s Frauenkirche, which Peter Candid signed and dated 1620. | Um 1548 Brügge - München 1628 | 15.-18.
