Fragment of silk fabric with vertical stripes (purple, yellow, red, blue, yellow, purple), featuring a leaf motif in woven gold-toned threads. It is shield-shaped, with the top edge straight and the bottom rounded, and is bordered by lace in metallic thread. It is probably the front part of a small purse or alms purse. It is mounted on gray cardboard and kept in a golden oval frame with glass. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE Silk; woven fabric with warp stripes (lampasso or brocatello “a liste”). Lace and weave in authentic metallic thread (foil wrapped around a yellow silk core, visible at worn spots). The back shows the same design in mirror image. DATE End of the 18th – 19th century. DIMENSIONS Fabric: 18 x 16 cm Frame: about 35 x 31 cm CONDITION Genuine wear: fraying of the weaves at several points, fraying along the upper edge, oxidation and partial loss of the gilding on the lace. Colors still vivid. Never cleaned or restored. The frame shows light gilding oxidation; on the back, closing cardboard with pencil annotations (counts and a signature).
