Teotihuacan Stone Cargador Figure - Seated Bearer with Tumpline

Teotihuacan Stone Cargador Figure - Seated Bearer with Tumpline

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Teotihuacan. A carved stone figure crouches in the timeless posture of the burden-bearer, knees drawn up toward the chest and an empty sack slung across the back. The load is secured by a tumpline, the broad carrying strap that loops over the crown of the head, a device still used across highland Mexico today. The face is gently modeled, the features softened by age, the body rounded and androgynous though the proportions lean toward the feminine. Once the now-missing arms likely rested upon the knees, perhaps steadying a vessel or further cargo. Such cargador (porter) figures distill the labor that moved goods, tribute, and offerings through the great metropolis of Teotihuacan, transforming an everyday human act into enduring sculptural form. The compact, inward-folded composition lends the piece a quiet monumentality despite its modest scale. The tumpline (mecapal in Nahuatl) is among the oldest load-bearing technologies of Mesoamerica. With neither draft animals nor the wheel in practical use, the movement of maize, obsidian, ceramics, and tribute across Teotihuacan's vast urban grid depended on human porters who balanced weight against the strong muscles of the neck and brow. Sculptures of cargadores thus memorialize the anonymous labor underpinning one of the ancient world's largest cities, where as many as a hundred thousand people lived. The androgynous treatment of the body is characteristic of much Teotihuacan stone sculpture, which favored generalized, frontal, and geometrically disciplined forms over individualized portraiture.
