Antique wooden-and-brass spyglass, functional, showing a beautiful patina and signs of use consistent with its age. The brass part bears the engraved signature of the “Engineer Chevallier, Optician to the King and the Princes,” with the address “Tour de l’Horloge du Palais, No. 1, opposite the Marché aux Fleurs, in Paris.” This signature is associated with Jean-Gabriel-Augustin Chevallier (1778-1848), a famous Parisian optician and maker of scientific instruments in the first half of the 19th century.
