Taxidermy: A Late Victorian Cased Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica), circa 1880-1900, (Caloenas nicobarica), Caloenas nicobarica), circa 1880-1900, an unsual and rare antique full-mount adult, with head turning to the right, perched atop an old tree stump, amidst enhanced natural grasses, mounted above painted simulated soil groundwork beneath, set against a pale blue painted backdrop, enclosed within an ebonised period style three-glass display case, 41cm by 20.5cm by 41.5cm. This species of Pigeon is native to small islands and coastal regions from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, east through the Indonesian Archipelego, to the Soloman's and Palua. It is the only living member of the genus Caloenas alongside the extinct Spotted green pigeon and Kanaka pigeon, and is the closest living relative of the extinct Dodo and Rodrigues solitaire, re-cased and mounted by Barry Williams, Taxidermy, Cannock, Staffordshire Provenance: The Property of an American Collector CITES Annex A, Appendix I (pre-1947 exempt)
