TAGO MASK - Lot 16

TAGO MASK Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Gulf of Huon, Huon Peninsula, Malasiga Village 19th–20th century Rattan, sago palm leaf sheath, feathers, lichen, seeds, human hair, wood, and coconut shell with red, black, and white pigments. H. 58.5 cm – W. 23 cm Provenance: - Collected in the field by Morris Young in the village of Malasiga around 1970. - Collection of Patricia and Ron May, Canberra. - Acquired from Patricia and Ron May, Canberra, around 1988. Exhibitions: - “Bark and Basketry,” Galerie Meyer, Paris, 1990. Publications: - *Océanie/Oceania* No. 7, Galerie Meyer, Paris, No. 24 - Meyer, Anthony JP, *Oceanic Art / Ozeanische Kunst / Art Océanien*, Könemann Verlag, Cologne, 1995, fig. 159, pp. 158–159, vol. I Bibliography: - Lupu, François et al., *Océanie: The Long Journey of the Mask*, Rennes, Ouest-France, 1983 - Melanesian Images, exhibition catalog, Minnesota Museum of Art, Saint Paul, 1981 - Smidt, D., Sculpture of Africa and Oceania, Otterlo, Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, 1990 Such masks evoke the tago spirits, whose mythological existence is closely linked to the creation of Tami Island, where each clan possessed one such mask. The tago spirits, associated with initiation rites, were displayed during ceremonies. The masks appeared cyclically every 10 or 12 years, and during the year dedicated to the tago ceremonies, a period of peace prevailed on the island, with the inhabitants required to postpone all their conflicts until the end of the ceremonies. Once the ceremonial year was over, the masks returned to their place of storage: special houses built in the forest, to which only initiated men had access. A similar mask entered the collections of the Musée de l’Homme in Paris at the end of the 19th century (now the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, No. M.H. 94.14.1), another at the Minnesota Museum of Art, Minneapolis (No. L79.15.187), and a third in the collections of the Museum der Kulturen in Basel (No. VB 27076).
