Oil on canvas depicting flowers in a vase signed Taf Wallet (1902-2001) Taf Wallet (born Gustave Wallet), born in La Louvière on 24 November 1902 and died in Schaerbeek on 1 December 2001, was a Belgian painter, engraver, mosaicist and stained-glass artist, of Walloon father and Flemish mother. He was a friend of Paul Delvaux. Biography Gustave Fernand Hector Wallet, born in La Louvière on 24 November 1902, is the son of Fernand Wallet, butcher, and his wife Ida Deneyer[1]. He first studied wood and marble at the La Louvière Industrial School (1916-1917). He refined his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Mons under Alfred Duriau and Émile Motte (1920-1922) as well as at the Academy of Brussels under Constant Montald, Jean Delville and Émile Fabry (1922-1926). He settled in Schaerbeek in 1923. The Godecharle Prize (1928) allowed him to visit France and Italy in 1930. In 1933, the artist moved to Saint-Idesbald, and his work underwent a strong maritime influence. He won the Haine (Hainaut) Prize in 1934. He mainly created clear and robust landscapes, seascapes, marine scenes and still lifes. Initially in a realistic style, but later, after World War II, more impressionist with a slight Ensor influence. Later, he paid more attention to composition, stylization and the elaboration of his subjects. His works express poetry, joie de vivre and optimism. The artist sought to capture the special light of the coast in his paintings. He developed his own luminism, a new form of pointillism comparable to the neo-impressionism of Georges Seurat or Paul Signac. Taf Wallet had an eye for colors, and from this emanated a great deal of emotion. He preferentially used certain nuances of blues, yellows, greens and reds. In 1947, he became a professor of engraving and in 1959 professor of landscape painting at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Co-founder of the Nervia group, administrative member of the Alliance Française, member of the Steering Committee of the National Council of the Plastic Arts and member of the Belgian Society of Seascape Painters, member of the Bon Vouloir Circles, The Friends of Art, The Friends of Hainaut. Distinctions 1925: First prize for composition and painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels (great distinction). 1928: Godecharle Prize with a painting titled The Head of the Grandmother. 1928: Third mention at the Prix de Rome. 1934: Haine Prize. 1937: Godecharle Prize. 1954: Chardin Prize for engraving. 1954: Maritime Rise Prize.
