Italian wooden carved, gilt and painted candlestick – 19th century The object presents a slender baluster shaft, articulated by turned knobs and carved decorations. Particularly characteristic are the lanceolate leaf elements and beaded motifs highlighted by gilding, alternated with surfaces painted in a delicate light green-gray tone. The bottom part features a tripartite base with an architectural setting, frontally decorated by a raised gilded rosette and ending with three carved feet in a zoomorphic style. The combination of a turned stem, vegetal motifs, tripartite base and carved feet belongs to the Italian tradition of large decorative and ecclesiastical candlesticks. Auction comparisons show the persistence of this typology during the 19th century; The surface preserves a very decorative patina, with gilding and polychromy worn irregularly by time, exposing at various points the preparatory layers and the underlying wood.
