All auctions / Lighting / Table lamp (2) - Bronze

Pair of neoclassical/empire style bronze table lamps featuring a columnar design, detailed base motifs and elegant cream-coloured textile lampshades This style of lamp is primarily associated with the Empire period of the early 19th century (c. 1800–1815) or the subsequent Neoclassical (Classicist) era. Original pieces (early 19th century): Originally made as candlesticks, they were converted to operate with electricity during the 20th century. A closer examination of the base of the lamp indicates that this piece most likely dates from the second half of the 19th century or the very beginning of the 20th century (approximately 1860–1910). The following technical details are most revealing in determining the age: 1. Internal structure of the casting The interior of the base is thick, heavy, cast bronze or brass with an uneven surface. Traces of the traditional casting process (such as sand casting) are clearly visible. In pieces made from the mid-20th century (from the 1950s), the interior of the lamp bases is much thinner, more uniform, and often completely smooth, machined. 2. The mounting technique (The threaded stem and the weight) A thick, subsequently machined threaded iron or steel stem runs in the middle, at the end of which a thick, round mounting nut/weight can be seen. • This type of construction was typical of heavy candelabra, candlesticks or early gas lamps of the 19th century. • It is noteworthy that the cable runs directly through this central stem. This suggests that the object was either originally designed as a lamp at the dawn of early electricity (turn of the century, Historicism / Belle Époque period), or that an earlier candlestick was precisely converted into a table lamp in the early 20th century. 3. Authentic, deep patina The dark brown layer visible on the surface of the metal, as well as the bluish-green copper carbonate appearing in the depressions (green patina), are not artificially applied chemical coloring. This type of uneven, deep oxidation only develops over many decades (up to 100+ years) under the influence of air humidity. Overall, the structure of the lamps confirms that these are not modern retro pieces, but genuine antiques over 100 years old, made during the historicizing neoclassical wave of the late 19th century. They are in very good condition with a few signs of use. The dimensions without lampshade are 46 x 16 x 16 cm. We can post it carefully packaged, in an insured, registered package.
