(t) CHINA--REPUBLIC. Central Bank of China. 10 Yuan, 1945. P-272. S/M#C300-222. PMG Extremely Fine 40. Printed by the Central Printing Factory (CPF) 'For Circulation in Vietnam'. Red, Sun Yat Sen at left, similar in appearance to the Fabi notes issued in the 1940s. Extremely rare. PMG Comments "Stains." Few banknote series are as steeped in post war political tension as the unissued 1945 Vietnam set. Comprising 5, 10, and 50 Yuan notes printed for the Nationalist Army of Lu Han to accept the Japanese surrender in northern French Indochina, this 24 million yuan issue never reached soldiers' hands. French opposition halted distribution, and the Nationalists pivoted to Customs Units for payment. When the Chinese Civil War reignited in 1946, the matter was permanently shelved. Today, these 'ghost notes' stand as one of the Central Bank of China's ultimate rarities. Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000. Provenance: From the Renaissance Collection of Central Bank of China. (t) This lot was manufactured in China (including Hong Kong), Russia or Republic of Belarus and was sourced from outside the United States for this auction after tariffs were enacted by the United States.
