One of the Earliest Notes Available! (t) CHINA--EMPIRE. Yuan Dynasty. 2 Kuan, 1264-1341. P-Unlisted. S/M#C167-1. PMG Fine 12. Large vertical format printed on mulberry paper. 20 strings of cash coins at the center with a large red stamped seal over. Bank name, top center. Ornate bordering design and text at the lower center with an additional stamped seal. A note that predates the famous Ming Dynasty notes by nearly 100 years and, not surprisingly, is extremely rare in any state of preservation. While typical restorations are seen on this piece, it represents one of the more attractive notes from the Yuan dynasty we have offered to date. The Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), founded by Kublai Khan, marked the first time all of China was ruled by a Mongol dynasty, with its capital at Dadu (modern Beijing). The government retained many Chinese administrative practices while placing Mongols and other non-Han peoples in leading positions, and the period was notable for active trade across Asia under the wider Mongol Empire. The dynasty made extensive use of paper money (jiaochao), issuing state-backed notes intended for circulation throughout its territories, but repeated overissue led to inflation and financial strain prior to the dynasty’s fall to the Ming in 1368. An important opportunity to acquire an extremely rare early note. PMG Comments "Restoration." Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000. (t) This lot was manufactured in China (including Hong Kong), Russia or Republic of Belarus and was sourced from outside the United States for this auction after tariffs were enacted by the United States.
