Syrinx aruanus with Natural Periostracum – Exceptional Large Australian Trumpet Shell A superb and exceptionally large specimen of Syrinx aruanus, commonly known as the Australian Trumpet, one of the largest living gastropod species and among the most impressive shells in the world. Measuring 49 × 21 × 17 cm, this specimen has a monumental presence and immediately stands out for its exceptional proportions. A particularly interesting feature is the presence of the natural periostracum, the organic outer layer that covers the shell during the life of the mollusc. This preserved surface gives the specimen a more authentic and natural appearance, with warm brownish and earthy tones contrasting with the lighter calcareous shell beneath. The shell retains the characteristic massive body whorl, elongated siphonal canal and high stepped spire of the species. The broad aperture reveals a smoother and lighter interior, creating a striking contrast with the textured external surface and remaining periostracum. Natural growth lines, marine traces and irregularities are visible throughout the specimen and are consistent with its authentic origin and impressive size. Viewed from different angles, the shell has a powerful sculptural quality, combining substantial volume, elegant curvature and the unmistakable proportions of a mature Syrinx aruanus. An exceptional collector’s specimen, especially interesting for the preservation of its natural periostracum, its remarkable dimensions and its strong decorative presence.
