SWEDEN. Relations with France Silver Medal, ND (1680-85). Karl XI. NGC MS-61. Hild-92; Delzanno-132a; Bruun-17612. Diameter: 51 mm. Weight: 43 gms. Edge legend: TRAU NICHT DEM SCHLAF. HIER LIEGT KEIN SCHAF - 'trust not the sleep, here lies no sheep'. Rare medal; old, soft toning and remarkably well-struck and well-preserved details, most noticeably in the lion's coat and the rooster's tailfeathers; soft hairlines, only visible in hard light. Presumably struck in Germany, the medal mocks the French king Louis XIV in his attempt to persuade Karl XI to surrender his lands in Pfalz to him, claiming the rights to the lands through the control of the bishopric of Metz. Karl XI refused and allied himself with the enemies of France, forcing Louis to cede his claim. On the medal the lion lies on a sheaf of wheat (an allegory of the Swedish king and the dynasty of Wasa), with the roster (louis) pecking around. Estimate: €2,000 - €3,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Royal Swedish Coin Cabinet Duplicates Sale (Stockholm - 1895) Lot #718. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
