The Oldest Coin Type of Sweden in Wonderful Condition SWEDEN. Penny, ND (995-1022). Sigtuna Mint. Olof Skötkonung. NGC AU-58. Llt-12a: Malmer-4.10.73.6: SMH-13; Delzanno-13; Bruun-11144. Weight: 2.57 gms. Moneyer: Snelling. A very rare combination of a clear strike and exceptional conservation makes this uncirculated piece one the best of its type; light encrustations only ads to the eye-appeal. The Sigtuna coinage, the oldest coinage of Sweden, served as a crucial instrument for asserting royal authority and Christian identity, representing the shift from the use of fragmented foreign silver (hack-silver) to a standardized national currency. Estimate: €4,000 - €5,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Purchased Stockholm, 1851.
