All auctions / Asian Art / Swatow vase - Porcelain - China - People's Republic of China (1949 - present)

A tall globular vase, 17 cm high, made of white and blue Chinese porcelain. The body of the vase features a typical naturalistic motif with a stylized deer immersed in a landscape with plants and bamboo stalks. On the shoulder and near the neck there are visible geometric checkered bands alternating with floral reserves and 'panel' decorations typical of the Kraak style. The presence of sand granules or firing impurities and the reddish/orange tint along the edge where the glaze meets the raw clay are distinctive features of Zhangzhou provincial porcelain (Swatow Ware). During firing, these vases were laid on beds of sand in the kilns, often leaving traces on the base.
