This ring from our workshop features an unusual diamond set in the center. The stone, with a modern brilliant cut, weighs approximately 1.44 ct and has a very slight warm tinted colour (J). So far, nothing very unusual. What makes it one-of-a-kind, however, is what lies within: here we see an unusually rich, natural pattern of inclusions. It’s worth taking a closer look at the stone with a magnifying glass. We see small black dots of graphite, along with light-colored, swirling shapes in the center of the crystal. They appear frozen in motion, evoking a sense of the heat and force under which the diamond formed deep within the Earth hundreds of millions of years ago. It’s also interesting to look at the side of the stone, because here, between two platinum prongs, you can see what’s called a “natural”—a remnant of the diamond crystal’s original outer shell: We see parallel lines and small, perfectly shaped triangles: it’s as if nature had drawn on the stone here. The diamond is a so-called “Salt & Pepper” diamond, yet it looks even more like an ice crystal—one that, of course, never melts and thus symbolizes not only the eternity of love but also a unique love, for there is no other stone quite like it. The large diamond is held in place by a classic platinum prong setting. It is subtly set apart from the ring shoulders, which are set with smaller brilliant-cut diamonds, giving the center stone space and light. For this ring, we were able to work exclusively with materials already on hand in our workshop. Both the platinum and the diamonds come from older pieces of jewellery and were reassembled by us and crafted into this ring.
