Set of 3 early industrial stools – solid wood & steel tube frame – circa 1920s/30s A remarkably characterful set of three early industrial stools, built with heavy round wooden seats and simple curved steel tube frames. It is precisely the combination of seasoned wood, weathered metal and the pronounced patina of use that gives these stools their authentic factory look. The three stools are almost identical in construction and can also be nested within each other. An extremely functional design as used in workshops, schools and commercial furniture: little material, sturdy, easily movable and efficient to store. The solid round seats show beautifully visible wood grain, rounded edges and a warm deep brown color. After decades of use, each seat has taken on its own life: wear, dark spots, scratches and small damages ensure that no two stools look exactly the same. Early modernist design The use of curved steel tubing for furniture really came into vogue in the latter half of the 1920s. Thonet describes how Marcel Breuer began experimenting with steel tubing from 1925 and had stools and tables made in this material at an early stage. A documented Bauhaus stool by Breuer from 1926 also combines a wooden seat with a simple metal tube frame; such furniture was developed as strong and functional consumer/mobility furniture. In the 1930s, various European stools with round wooden seats and steel tube constructions appeared, among others at Thonet and related manufacturers. These three stools are not visibly marked and are therefore explicitly not attributed to Breuer, Thonet, Gispen, or any other designer. Based on construction, material use and appearance, however, they fit very well within the early industrial/modernist furnishings of roughly the 1920s–1930s. The wooden seats show scratches, wear, color changes, dark areas of use, dents and localized small damages. The metal frames show substantial aging and wear with oxidation, patina, discoloration and loss of the original finish. The leg ends are partially equipped with black protective caps; these are not identical on all legs. 1 stool still has its original caps. A particularly decorative set for lovers of original industrial interiors, Bauhaus, loft design and early 20th-century utility furniture. Beautiful as stools, side tables or as a strong industrial accent in a shop, studio, workshop or loft.
