STONE Caribbean Sea, Santo Domingo, Taíno people Basalt (?) weathered by wear and age. Pre-1492 H. 14 cm – W. 9 cm – D. 11 cm Provenance: - Ferdinand Anton Collection (1929–2003), Germany Exhibition & Publication: - Stirb und Werde – Die and Become, Daniel Blau Gallery, Munich, 2005 An important three-pointed ceremonial stone (trigonolite) bearing the effigy of a Zemi, the back and central point of which are carved with incised geometric motifs. These portable sculptures were originally described by early Spanish chroniclers—particularly the monk Ramon Pané, a companion on Christopher Columbus’s second voyage to the Americas—as being associated with the fertility of cassava crops. The three-pointed stones vary in size, ranging from a few centimeters to large examples measuring up to 42 cm, such as the one at the Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac Museum, and weighing several kilograms. They feature a variety of images ranging from anthropomorphic and zoomorphic to geometric, and are sometimes purely geometric in form, with no visible depictions or ornamentation.
