STICK KNOWN AS A “CHEFFERIE” Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Northern Massim Region, Trobriand Islands (?) 19th century Ebony and limestone H. 85 cm A very delicate so-called chieftain’s staff, featuring a small figure crouching in the classic Massim posture with elbows on the knees and hands under the chin. A very attractive design of interlocking spirals is carved on the shaft halfway up.
