The beer originated in 1926, when it was marketed as 'Stella' (Latin for Star) as a Christmas beer. The recipe has since been regularly changed. The history of the brewery, however, goes back to 1366, the year that is also on the logo. From the city of Leuven's tax registers of that year it appears that the inn-brewery Den Hoorn, the original brewery, already existed. On 13 June 1708 Sebastian Artois earned the highly coveted title of Master Brewer. Since then the name Artois has been associated with the brewery.
