Statue, Heilige Judas of Matthias - 39.5 cm - Wood

Beautiful hand-carved and polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the apostle Judas Iscariot or Saint Matthias. Spanish, circa 1950-1960 or somewhat older. The figure is recognizable by the money purse (or coin pouch) that he holds in his left hand. In Christian iconography, the money purse is the fixed attribute of Judas Iscariot, who served as treasurer of the apostles and betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver according to the Bible story. Because Judas is rarely depicted as a saint with a halo, the statue may also symbolize Matthias (the apostle who took his place) or a specific folk-art design of an apostle/saint.
