Spanish school (XX) - Inmaculada Concepción

Title: Immaculate Conception ㅤ School: European Baroque School (20th century, 1900) ㅤ Style: Devotional Baroque ㅤ Technique: Oil on canvas ㅤ Condition: Good overall state of preservation, with signs of age and wear consistent with the era. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: Work linked to the tradition of European religious painting inspired by Baroque, especially the Marian models developed between the 17th and 18th centuries and later reinterpreted in devotional painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The composition, the elevated gaze, hands joined in prayer, and the blue mantle refer to the traditional iconography of the Immaculate Conception, with a clear influence from academic religious painting and from compositional schemes inherited from the Baroque. ㅤ The work represents the Immaculate Conception half-length, in a posture of recollection and prayer. The figure appears with hands joined over the chest and gaze raised toward the heights, reinforcing the spiritual and contemplative character of the scene. The face, with idealized features, is framed by long wavy hair that falls over the shoulders. ㅤ The Virgin wears a light tunic with ample folds and a dark blue mantle that covers one shoulder and extends through a large part of the composition. The treatment of the fabrics, through contrasts of light and shadow, seeks to emphasize the volume and depth of the folds. The background is resolved with a diffused atmosphere in ochre, greenish, and grayish tones, concentrating a soft luminosity around the figure’s head. ㅤ The execution presents a clear devotional vocation, with special attention to the modeling of the face and hands. The composition maintains a frontal and balanced structure, while the chiaroscuro applied to the garment and hair connects the work with resources from the Baroque tradition, though interpreted from an academic sensibility typical of the turn of the century. ㅤ In the lower right area is a signature with initials accompanied by the date “1900”, coinciding with the chronology indicated for the work. ㅤ The painting is presented with a dark wooden frame, wide profile and moulded, with a sober and classic finish. Its deep brown tone contrasts with the light tones of the figure and reinforces the traditional and religious character of the ensemble. The frame shows signs of use and age. ㅤ Observations: The work may sustain damage during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will require photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority. ㅤ Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to causes such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions or weight of the item.
