Spanish School of the 17th Century - San Mateo

Descriptio Dimensions: 44 × 36 cm. Oil on panel, Spanish School, 17th century. In this depiction of Saint Matthew, the apostle is accompanied by an angel as he writes in a manuscript. The technique used in the execution of the vestments, particularly in the folds and texture of the clothing, reflects the influence of the Spanish Baroque style. The warm colours and soft light emanating from the faces of the saint and the angel give the work a deeply devotional character. The composition balances the divine with the earthly, a common feature in Spanish religious painting of the period. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
