SPAIN. Viceroyalty of New Spain. 1776-Mo FM 2 Reales. Mexico City Mint. Calico-1343, Yonaka-M2-76, KM-88.2. VF-20 (PCGS). Warm sandy-gray and olive-charcoal patina with a lovely target-like distribution to strong underlying antique gold, cobalt blue and rose-red iridescence. Arguably the most significant Spanish silver denomination to circulate in early America, the 2 reales from New World mints remained in active commerce for decades after the American Revolution. In fact, the sufficient quantity of Spanish colonial 2 reales in domestic circulation in large part explains the limited production of quarter dollars at the United States Mint from the denomination's debut in 1796 until passage of the Act of February 21, 1853. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 415475. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
