Sony Santosa (1964) - Retrato de Vietnamita

Title: Vietnamese Portrait ㅤ School: Realist (19th century) ㅤ Style: Genre Realism ㅤ Technique: Oil on canvas ㅤ State: Good overall condition consistent with its age. Presents restorations. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: The work relates to the tradition of realist and ethnographic portraiture developed during the 19th century, characterized by direct representation of popular types and figures tied to local contexts. By its subject matter and treatment, it can be associated with the realm of traveling painters, Orientalists, and artists interested in documenting figures from different regions of Asia. The attention to the face, clothing, and individual features reveals an descriptive intention close to academic naturalism, though with a freer brushwork in certain areas. ㅤ The composition features a half-portrait of an elderly Vietnamese man, depicted facing forward with the gaze slightly offset. His marked facial features, mustache and gray beard are treated with careful modeling of light and shadow. The character wears a dark traditional headdress and simple gray-toned clothing, elements that reinforce the genre character of the representation. ㅤ The palette is built on a contained range of ochres, browns, grays, and blacks. The face concentrates the warmer tones, gaining strong prominence against the neutral, poorly defined background. The lighting treatment emphasizes the wrinkles and volumes of the face, contributing psychological expressiveness and a notable sense of presence. ㅤ The work appears signed in the lower left corner. The whole conveys a clear intention of individual characterization, moving away from idealization to offer a human and direct representation of the sitter. ㅤ The frame presents a classical gold-colored wooden structure, enriched inside with ornamental moldings inspired by vegetation. The combination of gilding and brown-toned profiles creates an elegant transition toward the painting and reinforces its traditional character. ㅤ Observations: The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging.
