two small sculptures, unglazed clay, , (2), 5 and 6.7cm high, The Private Collection of Niladri and Ranu Chaki; a private collection, Surrey. Somnath Hore was a major figure of modern Indian art, whose practice encompassed drawing, printmaking, sculpture and painting. Born in Chittagong (now Bangladesh), Hore’s early experiences of the Bengal Famine of 1943 and the Tebhaga peasant movement profoundly influenced his imagery, which frequently centres on the human figure and themes of suffering, poverty and displacement. From the 1970s, Hore increasingly explored three-dimensional forms, working in clay, plaster and bronze. His sculptural figures retain the spare, often skeletal quality of his drawings and prints, with roughly modelled surfaces and distorted, attenuated bodies conveying a sense of vulnerability. Rather than depicting specific individuals, these works evoke the human condition through simplified, expressive forms.
