All auctions / Asian Art / Société Céramique Maastricht - Henri Breetvelt - Vase...
The monumental vase is executed in dark reddish-brown glazed earthenware and decorated on the front with a finely painted portrait of the Flemish master Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), based on one of his well-known self-portraits. Van Dyck is among the leading portrait painters of the Flemish Baroque and was, among other places, active at the English court of King Charles I. The depiction is particularly characteristic: Van Dyck is shown with his long, wavy hair, mustache and beard, and a striking white lace collar. The portrait is carried out in the painterly style that is typical for the historicizing decorations of Société Céramique Maastricht. The vase bears on the underside the blue factory mark of Société Céramique Maastricht. Its size of approximately 78 cm makes this an exceptionally monumental example. The decoration can be attributed to Henri Breetvelt (1864–1923), who in the early 20th century worked in Maastricht for Société Céramique. Comparable large portrait vases by Breetvelt are known from this period. Dating: circa 1902–1906. Condition: very good. Only minimal signs of aging and a few light scratches appropriate to the age. No chipping, no cracks and no restorations. NOTE: DUE TO THE SIZE AND WEIGHT, PICKUP ONLY (Schiedam), OR YOU MAY MAKE USE OF THE DELIVERY SERVICE OF BRENGER.NL
