[Signed] [First Edition] History of the Hawick Co-Operative Store Coy.

No stated date but understood to be 1889. Presumed first edition. 111pp., a frontispiece and thirteen other black and white illustrations. The Hawick Co-Operative Store Company grew out of the Chartist Association, and opened its first store (the Hawick Chartist Provision Store) in 1839. By the late 1880s it had grown to include six general stores, five butchers', a bakery, a shoe shop, a coal branch, a drapery, transport services and a savings bank. This is a history of the first fifty years of the Company, from its formation in 1839. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind-stamped design on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and a light dent on the top edge of the rear board. The spine and up to about 1 1/2" of the spine edge of the front board is noticeably faded. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
