Shark, Plesiosaur

Shark, Plesiosaur

In this lot we auction a set of teeth of good size from the species Otodus Obliquus (6.4-4 cm), Zarafasaura Oceanis (4.6 cm) and Pluridens sp. (5.6 cm). Very good overall preservation, plesiosaur tooth repaired. All teeth have a natural enamel luster, very pleasant. They come from phosphate mines (main quarries Oued Zem, Sidi Daoui and Sidi Chennane) in the Abdoun Ouled basin of the Khouribga province (Morocco). Oulad Abdoun is the largest fossil-bearing basin, and the northernmost of the major phosphate basins in Morocco. The phosphate deposits have preserved a large number of vertebrate fossils from the Late Cretaceous to the Eocene. The fossils include a diversity of marine and terrestrial animals, such as mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodiles, elasmobranchs and dinosaurs. Although they come from the same quarries, these species correspond to different geological times; Otodus Obliquus belongs to strata from the Paleogene period, mainly Paleocene-Eocene epochs, while Mosasaur and Plesiosaur are found in strata of the Late Cretaceous. Each mosasaur species has a distinctive tooth type that is easily recognizable; in this case, we have a considerably powerful tooth, (DRILLER), belonging to Pluridens sp. It is notable that they are quite elongated and conical, with a wide base and a curved tip, "they have a very distinctive shape, quite easy to identify". There are several species of the genus Pluridens, such as P. Imelaki, P. Walkeri or P. Serpentis, being a mid- to large-sized mosasaur, "it must have been a formidable predator". Zarafasaura Oceanis, according to the Arabs: ocean-dwelling giraffe reptile, is among the latest plesiosaur species that lived during the Cretaceous, and is also an iconic species of Morocco’s phosphates. As for Otodus, it is thought to have been a large shark, capable of exceeding 10 meters in length and weighing up to 15 tons. "The lot is accompanied by L-shaped acrylic display supports as a gift"
